Quantum sensors for microscopic tunneling systems

چکیده

Abstract The anomalous low-temperature properties of glasses arise from intrinsic excitable entities, so-called tunneling Two-Level-Systems (TLS), whose microscopic nature has been baffling solid-state physicists for decades. TLS have become particularly important micro-fabricated quantum devices such as superconducting qubits, where they are a major source decoherence. Here, we present method to characterize individual in virtually arbitrary materials deposited thin films. material is used the dielectric capacitor that shunts Josephson junction qubit. In hybrid system qubit serves an interface detect and control TLS. We demonstrate spectroscopic measurements resonances, evaluate their coupling applied strain DC-electric fields, find evidence strong interaction between coherent sample material. Our approach opens avenues spectroscopy investigate structure defects develop low-loss dielectrics urgently required advancement computers.

Microscopic model for sequential tunneling in semiconductor multiple quantum wells

We propose a self-consistent microscopic model of vertical sequential tunneling through multiple quantum wells. The model includes a detailed description of the contacts, uses the transfer Hamiltonian for expressions of the current and it treats the Coulomb interaction within a mean-field approximation. We analyze the current density through a double well and a superlattice and study the format...

Tunneling in open quantum systems

Processes involving quantum tunneling can be found in a huge variety of physical and chemical systems, ranging in length from the mesoscopic scale of a few microns to the subatomic scale of a few fermi. It has been realized already three decades ago that thereby the interaction of the tunneling degree of freedom with environmental degrees of freedom plays a crucial role. Namely, any realistic d...

Micromachined oxygen gas sensors for microscopic energy consumption measurement systems.

Although the indirect calorimeter is a useful tool, its size and expense mean that it is seldom used in hospitals. Furthermore, its flow-through measurement technique dilutes respiratory variations, so they can only be detected with some form of high-precision instrumentation. This study employs MEMS techniques to develop an oxygen sensor as one part of a microscopic energy consumption measurem...

Oscillatory tunneling between quantum Hall systems.

Electron tunneling between quantum Hall systems on the same two dimensional plane separated by a narrow barrier is studied. We show that in the limit where inelastic scattering time is much longer than the tunneling time, which can be achieved in practice, electrons can tunnel back and forth through the barrier continously, leading to an oscillating current in the absence of external drives. Th...

Quantum Tunneling in Half-Integer Spin Systems

Motivated by the experimental observations of resonant tunnelings in the systems with half-integer spin, such as V15 and Mn4, we study the mechanism of adiabatic change of the magnetization in systems with the time-reversal symmetry. Within the time-reversal symmetric models, effects of several types of perturbations are investigated. Although tunneling between the ground states is suppressed i...
